One employee's sick day was the strongest argument Intempo's homepage never made.
An HR-tech platform matching businesses with pre-vetted virtual assistants had a good product and a page describing the platform instead of the problem.
Hire one virtual assistant and that person is a single point of failure: a sick day, a holiday, a resignation, and the work stops. Intempo's product is built around that risk: pre-vetted people, matched to a role, with ongoing platform support behind them. I put the company's own homepage copy next to that mechanic, and the gap between them was the whole story.
The page spoke HR-tech instead: vetting, matching, platform, marketplace. Nowhere on it was the argument sitting right inside how the product actually worked. Intempo wasn't selling a single person. Nothing on the page said so.

Intempo wasn't selling a single person. Nothing on the page said so.
The positioning made the gap wider before anyone fixed the copy. "Alternative to recruiters" defines the product by what it replaces, and that only lands for a visitor already comparing options against a recruiter in the first place. The demo numbers showed the page wasn't reaching that visitor at the rate it needed to.
"Alternative to recruiters" became "plug-and-play team support" — a description of what the buyer gets to keep running, not of what the product replaces. The new page opened by separating Intempo from two categories buyers often compare it to — a marketplace, and an automated tool — before making any claim of its own. The feature list became three situations a visitor could recognize directly — executive support, marketing operations, customer service — instead of a description of how the matching worked. Sign-up and demo booking dropped the steps that were asking for commitment before the page had earned any.
Demo bookings rose 52% within four weeks of the relaunch. Bounce rate fell 38% over the same period — together, roughly 2.4 times the demos out of the same hundred visitors.
"Alternative to recruiters" wasn't inaccurate. It named a real competitor correctly. It just described the product by the thing it replaced instead of the argument it actually had.
Pull your own homepage copy and put it next to the single strongest, most specific reason your product beats the obvious alternative — not your tagline, the actual mechanism. If that mechanism isn't on the page anywhere, a buyer has no way to evaluate the one reason your product is actually different. The rest of selling without a sales team, from the first buyer to the first hire, is in go-to-market for a startup with no sales team.
