Evidence

What showed up once someone checked the work.

Owners usually write to me when one of these happens.

  1. You think your agency is taking you for a ride and you can’t prove it
  2. You need to hire an agency and you have no way to judge one
  3. Your team has a reason for everything and nothing changes
  4. You have contractors working and nobody senior deciding what they do
  5. The numbers look fine on the dashboard and you don’t trust them
  6. There is no marketing director, CTO or COO in the business, and the decisions that need one keep landing on you

What I take on

  1. 01The brief
  2. 02The number
  3. 03The check
  4. 04The seat

The agency was never told what to deliver.

Most of the time the contractor isn’t underperforming. They were never told what performing meant.

How I run it
  • Read what they were actually asked to do
  • Read what came back
  • Put the two side by side

The report is full of numbers that don’t change anything.

Not views or likes: one number that changes the business, agreed by both sides.

How I run it
  • Agree the number, the period and who reports it
  • Sign it off before the next month starts
  • Write it into the brief

The people checking the work are the people doing it.

Checked monthly by somebody who isn’t doing the work and isn’t paid by its volume. That is the whole job.

How I run it
  • Check the work against what was agreed
  • Keep a written record, so a settled decision stays settled
  • If you’re choosing an agency, compare them on the same brief

There is no marketing director, and every decision lands on you.

For an agreed period I take that seat: the priorities, the tasks and the numbers.

How I run it
  • Set the priorities and issue the tasks
  • Talk to your departments and contractors directly
  • Hand the seat back when it runs without me

How it runs

Monthly once it runs itself. Weekly, and inside the business, while it doesn’t.

  1. 01Free first call
  2. 02Read the briefs and the results
  3. 03Set the brief and the number
  4. 04Check and correct monthly
Price
Priced per engagement, agreed before anything starts.
You bring
  • The contracts, briefs and invoices as they stand
  • Access to the numbers and to the people doing the work
  • One named person who can decide between sessions
Not this
Replacing a contractor who is doing fine and being managed badly.

Questions owners ask first.

What do I end up with?
  • A brief your contractor can be held to, written so it can only be answered one way
  • What each of them is measured on, and who agreed it
  • The work checked against what was actually agreed
  • A written record, so a settled decision stays settled
  • Where we go further: the priorities set, the tasks issued and the KPIs held by somebody who is not you

You end up able to tell a good contractor from a badly managed one, and to prove which you have — with somebody senior holding it there while your team gets used to it.

What do you need from me to start?
  • What your contractors were asked to deliver, in writing if it exists
  • What the last three months cost and what is traceable to a customer
  • Last quarter’s agreed actions, and what shipped
When would you turn this down?

Replacing a contractor who is doing fine and being managed badly.

A title without access to the decisions.

A pair of senior hands to execute what has already been decided.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

Monthly once it runs itself. Weekly, and inside the business, while it doesn’t.

Priced per engagement, agreed before anything starts.

Why does this matter?

40% of small businesses that outsource their marketing leave the agency, and 56% of those leave within six to twelve months. The most common reason given was not seeing a return — 60% said the return was inadequate.

What the survey establishes is that not seeing a return is the common reason these relationships end. It does not say whether the cause was the work, the measurement or the supervision. What it does show is that replacing a contractor cannot fix an accountability system nobody ever defined.

How does it start?

With a free first call of about an hour. Bring what is happening and any numbers you trust; if this isn’t the right domain, I’ll tell you on that call.

Show me where the leads go.

Send the agency’s last report and what you pay them. I’ll tell you what I’d check first.
